A Princes Town vendor was remanded into custody on seven charges in relation to the alleged assault of a licensing officer when he appeared in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Marlon Seeraj, 31, of Inverness Road, Borde Narve, Princes Town, faced charges of obscene language, resisting arrest, assault of licensing officer Owen Mathurin, malicious damage of Mathurin’s shirt and wristwatch and four charges of escaping lawful custody.

He was represented by attorney Jeevan Rampersad when he appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court.

The incidents allegedly took place last Friday along Pointe-a-Pierre Road, San Fernando. Over a dozen licensing officers came to court in a show of support for their colleague.

They crowded the courtroom, listening intently as Wellington read the charges. The victim was not in court.

Wellington asked Seeraj if he had any pending matters, as he said a trace done on Seeraj showed 30 pending matters. But Seeraj disputed the records saying several of the matters, which included a charge for attempted murder, were dismissed.

Wellington then remanded him in custody until October 8 for the list of charges against him to be updated.
